Visual artist and archivist Guadalupe Rosales challenges traditional archiving with her immersive installation, “Echoes of a Collective Past.”
Rosales is most known for her digital archives on Instagram as Veteranas & Rucas and Map Pointz, both of which document Chicana histories through follower-submitted photos. In the past, Rosales has displayed these archival images and other pieces of donated ephemera, but this show is different.
Rosales transforms the gallery space into something reminiscent of a teenage bedroom or kickback party, replete with black light posters, photo collages, party flyers, and home video projections.
The show recreates the experience of a typical Chicana who grew up in Los Angeles in the ’90s. Rosales’ ultimate intentions are to create a safe space where Chicanx – and museum-goers at large – can discuss their youth, even if traumatic or shameful.
The show opens September 15, 2018 at the Vincent Price Museum and runs
until January 19, 2019.
