Opening day in 1955 at Disneyland was by all accounts a disaster. Record heat, long lines, broken rides and water fountains plagued the young theme park that could have led to its demise. One colorful account mentioned women’s heels were sinking into the fresh asphalt under the California sun.
Fortunately for dressed-up fans during the park’s 60th anniversary, things went much smoother, if still a little hot under the button-up collar. The occasion this time was Dapper Day, a biannual event in the spring and fall that encourages park attendees to break out their rockabilly best or flapper dress to add a little ritz to the Disney experience. Since its inception in 2013, the event has grown to other Disney Parks in Orlando, Florida and Paris. The Anaheim, California event on Sept. 18–19 boasted an adjoining expo of retro and vintage vendors, a car show and a swing dance after party.
Families, coordinated groups of teens, and couples young and old dolled up in their dapper duds could be seen throughout the park, even filling it to capacity at one point during the day. Many fancy fans chose Disney Bound, which incorporates Disney characters’ likeness into their outfits. Creativity was in no short supply.
Take a look at some of the dapper folks and moments from this year’s fall soiree:
