These days there is a new “f-word” on the tip of many tongues. Although it might not be obscene, the word “feminism” leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many. While some are embracing feminism’s ideals of intersectionality and empowerment, the f-word makes others shudder with fear — an uprising of ball-busting lady-monsters from the feminist underworld is simply waiting to destroy the polite order of heteronormative society. But is the terror of feminism a reality, or just another bad nightmare?
Ampersand reporter Kelby Vera braves the horrors of Kill Joy’s Kastle — artists Allyson Mitchell & Deirdre Logue’s immersive lesbian-feminist art installation — in search of these mythical female monsters.
Kill Joy’s Kastle was organized by the ONE Archives, the world’s largest archive of LGBTQ material, with additional support from the city of West Hollywood and The Andy Warhol Foundation.
You can find out more about the artists Allyson Mitchell and Deirdre Logue at their respective websites, in addition to their ongoing project, the Feminist Art Gallery (FAG) in Toronto, Canada.
